 A  Fresh Start..........

Middle school might seem scary at first, but after awhile, you will think back and laugh. The first thing you need to do is GET IN BED ON TIME!!!! On average, 11 year old girls need 10 hours of sleep. So that means, if you need to wake up at 7:00 to get ready for school, be in bed at 9:00 so you can be wide awake for your lessons. Also, try to eat a good breakfast. Oatmeal with bananas and orange juice is good. Just don't eat something real surgary because it won't last and won't make you feel your best.

What do I wear???????

Make sure, the night before, that the clothes you want to wear are clean. You may want to just wash all your clothes on the weekends so you have clothes for the whole week. Make sure you have five clean tops and five clean bottoms. MATCH!!!! It is not good when your clothes don't match. But, that doesn't mean you can't mix and match! Change it up every once in a while! Before school starts, buy a lot of new clothes, and about once a month, buy a new outfit. Jeans and baby doll shirts are really cute, and jeans go with ANYTHING!!!!  Bring a watch to keep track of time. Also, wear comfy shoes. I, Meagan, personally love converse. Make sure you have good tennis shoes for P.E.! But, before you go shop for all your new clothes, check you schools dress code. Most schools don't allow anything that shows your shoulders, tommy, or short shorts.

Get Into The Habit

The Night Before.......

Look at you planner or calender to see what the next day holds. Take out anything you may need like your insterment for band or your tennis shoes for P.E. Set out what you are going to wear tomorrow so you don't get all stressed in the morning.  Make sure you did all your homework and pach your bookbag with all the stuff you may need for the day to come. Pack your lunch, or tuck any luch oney in your bookbag. If you like to sleep in, shower or bathe so you are nice and fresh the next day. And, read a good book before bed to help you relax and get your mind of things. And, make sure your alarm is set for the right time. The first week of school you may want to set it a little earlier than you think you need it to make sure you have enough time in the morning to get ready.

In The Morning.........

Stretch and get your body moving. Then, bathe or shower if you didn't the night before and complete your hygiene needs ( Teeth, feminine products....). Get dressed, then eat a healthy breakfast, not surgary. Do a quick mirror check to make sure you look ready for school, and then grab your stuff and go!

Backpack.....

Your backpack in middle school may be a little heavier than your used to. Buy one that has adjustable straps and keep it close to your body, with both straps on. It helps if you put bigger, heavier books closer to your body. That makes it easier and more comfortable to wear. A backpack with padded straps is also VERY reccomended. Put some books in your locker that you don't need until later in the day. Usually, you will have a special part of the day when you can go to your locker and change books. Then, you won't have to carry around a million books at a time. Clean out your backpack twice a week so you don't carry around unneeded papers.

Take A Seat.....

If wear you sit is up to you, choose carefully so you don't regret it and want to switch places the rest of the year. It is better to sit closer to the front so you can hear the teacher better. If you do get stuck back there, then let the teaher know if you can't hear.  Remember, window seats can be distracting, and sit by someone you want to know better. Sitting by the door may be conveinyent, but you may get distracted. Sit in the "T" zone. Right in front of the teacher on the first or second rows. Don't be afraid to sit right in front of the teacher.

Questions?????

Don't be afraid to ask questions in class.  The teachers are there to help you. If you don't ask questions, then you may not learn as much, and some grades are based on class participation. You can also ask a librarian, Mom/Dad, classmates, school counsler, older siblings, and the internet are very good resources.

Homework...

Be organized. In middle school, you will have A LOT more homework. Have a planner, and don't schedule too many activities. Homework first, and the you won't have to worry about it when you are playing, and you don't have to stay up all night. Take breaks so you don't get too stressed. Get rid of all distractions, and have a snack and water next to you so you won't get up to get some, and then get distracted. Don't whine, you will have to do it, and whining wastes time. More tips: Write neatly, proofread, and hand in your work on time.

Friends.....

Be yourself. That is the most important thing. If someone doesn't like you for who you are, then they shouldn't be your friend. NEVER give into peer pressure. You may think you are going to gain friends, but you will really just loose them. Choose the right friends. Friends that don't try to pull you down, and don't make you feel small. And, be a good friend, and you will find friends around every corner. But, you may get so caught up in your new friends that you forget about the old ones. DON'T! Invite them to parties, and over with new friends for study-days. If you have a friend who you don't want to be friends with anymore, tell them why you don't, and maybe they will change. but if not, then let them go. You will be better off.

Just remember, be yourself, and study hard, and you will go far in middle school. For a lot more information and tips on middle school go to your local bookstore  and pick up a copy of American Girl's " a smart girls guide to starting middle school". Good luck!!!!! :)
